olympic hockey

Being raised a hockey fan (and goalie,) I thoroughly enjoyed the high quality of the sport played at this year’s Olympics. I haven’t paid attention to the NHL for a decade or so, but I was quickly caught up in the drama and outstanding skill of the teams involved. It was the sport at its finest and a story to rival the 1980 “Miracle on Ice.” Even though the U.S. team lost to Canada in the gold medal game, it was thrilling, particularly Zach Parise’s goal with 24.4 seconds remaining, which inspired joyous revelry as exemplified in the following videos:

Anybody else catch this live?

I grew up following hockey to a certain extent, mostly going to Western Michigan University games back when they were good, and I have to say that hockey more than any other sport I’ve watched has a way of making those last second goals happen. I think it’s just because the playing surface can be traversed so quickly but I’ve seen more insane less-than-a-second-left goals in that sport than any other. It’s also way stressful and exciting to watch live because of that same frenetic pace and sort of constant confusion. It was a great tournament and honestly it’s probably better that Canada won anyway. Maybe I’d even watch some NHL games if they were ever on TV.

This reminds me though…Ghost Island march madness bracket?
