“Wake up, Jake-ofs Lad!” Or reading, I

Joyce’s mode of punning is synthetic– proceeding by the concretion of words within words based on the basic logic of homophony.

The puns proceed like imagistic-collages.  Think John Cage’s “Imaginary Landscapes” of tape-collage.  When I read, I try to create unfolding fields of meaning, imagistically, among other ways of feeling one’s way through the text.  It’s not unlike experimenting with cognitive dissonance, a la Duchamp’s “Anemic Cinema.”

So, for example, a found-image interpretation of an early sentence from FW.

“Sir Tristram, violer d’amores,”

Making collages like this is a fun way to proceed.  If you so choose, read a few pages, find a juicy pun, hemorrhaging with meanings, like a palmofgranite, and make a field for it (sound collages are also a possibility–or computer programming or flow-proofs in non-euclidean geometry).  If a method like this isn’t too constricting.

i will soon do something here near this thing you made and did and propose and i will take all the words of fw that i like or one or two maybe and take them for what they are now, which is to say obviously from their source but excised and so open to contemporary reading. which is to say: i am not caring a whit about jj and his authorial intention. i am reading it all as overcoded and transcoded and re- and de- and every other kind of coded you can find and so am plucking the syntagms out of history and running them through the scrim of the now, and chuffing and chafing and strafing them into some kind of fragmenting and free floating semiotic and meaning web, full of motion and force and eliding collisions or colliding elisions or some kind of gerund-noun combo involving both a smash and an avoidance.

    A. “chuffing and chafing and strafing them into some kind of fragmenting and free floating semiotic and meaning web, full of motion and force and eliding collisions or colliding elisions . . . both a smash and an avoidance”

The point of the post being to say that the reading is to be . . . ( go to A.)

also I really think we should start a Ghost Island Free School Blog– and focus this blog on the adventure-piece, I’m uncomfortable with how much Joyce is bogarting our focus

i think you should make that free school blog. then we will add it to the sidebar of this page. we are planning some re-design anyways including links, so attaching an auxiliary school blog seems like a good idea.

would you prefer that Bogart rejoiced in our focus?

That was a terrible pun. However, that’s a totally cool idea for another blog. So we could have one that is a more straight up academic-style blog and another that is dedicated to what my friend called “a group fiction” piece but I prefer to think of as a literary clusterfuck.

Though, I have to say, with this urban coyote hypertext shit that I’m working on… where would I post it?

Lastly, we should do podcasts. Just because even though I hate the sound of my own voice when it’s recorded, I think maybe a group podcast could be just ridiculous enough to warrant the time that would go into it.

By the way, Ben Segal and the Gerund Noun Combo sounds like a killer name for a jazz group.

    1) I am up for recording mp3s, but refuse to call them ‘pod casts’. That neologism is a brand-word, an Apple advertisememe that actually doesn’t make sense. ‘Podcasts’ are just sound files that are playable on any digital device and that are not ‘cast’ at all but downloaded.

    2) I don’t know any instruments but will gladly sing for a lounge act.

    3) urban coyote? does that have to do with coyote ugly?

    1) We could call them “bod” casts because we’ve all got such great builds.

    2) I play the guitar and the ukulele, but have been known to rock out on the vocoder as well.

    3) Not at all, not in the least. …unfortunately.
